Hobo Magazine

hobo

Hobo Magazine is a really rad arts/culture magazine now in its 11th issue. Consistently featuring unlikely faces on their covers (i.e. Christopher Walken, Naomi Watts, Philip Seymour Hoffman), this method of operation is indicative of the publication’s general nature — an independent magazine touching its toes to the waters of the mainstream world. Hobo’s progressive content choices are buttressed by a slick presentation; the art direction provides excellent placement of assertive typeface against a strategic use of white-space. Their photography all retains a sense of uniformity and continually hooks back into the overall branding. I also love that you can read selected stories from previous issues on their site, and their journal is starting to come along as well. Click through the jump to see some images.

Hannah Stouffer

bonnenuit

Hannah Stouffer is a Los Angeles Angeles-based illustrator, and her work is nothing short of breathtaking. From her site:

The heart of darkness exists within the light. Black Dawn, Dawn After Dawn Tepid Neon, Frozen Clarity.
This contrast, and the ever present existence of the two is constant. Macabre Elegance. Darkness Falls Forever… Since The Beginning.

So much depth, so much color, so much detail and mystique, it’s almost difficult to take in all that’s going on in these illustrations. And Stouffer is certainly anything but a ‘one trick pony.’ Her portfolio boasts a range of styles, typographical work, and art direction that renders her open to lots of different kinds of projects. Click through the jump to see this variety, along with a face to put alongside the work.

The Hazards of Love: Visualized

The gifted minds at Flux have once again created a remarkable audio / visual experience which takes place this evening @UCLA. The project couples four filmmakers with The Decemberists as they perform their new album ‘Here Come the Waves: The Hazards of Love’ in it’s entirety.

The four filmmakers: Julia Pott, Guilherme Marcondes, Santa Maria, and Peter Sluszka, have each created individual animations, which take you through the journey of The Hazards of Love. From this preview alone, the pieces look absolutely mesmerizing.

Milton Glaser Draws & Lectures

miltonglaser

There’s something fantastic about this video. It’s not necessarily the quality of the actual drawing that Glaser comes away with, or even so much getting to see the process of its construction. Rather, the magic in this video comes through the simultaneity of listening to his voice asserting ideas about drawing as an art form in its relation to our perception of reality, while watching him methodically piece together a rather simple portrait. This is something meditative, and rather than the voice detracting from the drawing or the drawing detracting from the voice, the two appropriately synchronize with one another, in some ways furthering the very concepts he’s trying to get across. Try not to be disappointed after all my hype. It’s not that great. Video post-jump.

Black Mold: Metal Spiderwebs

chadv

Chad Vangaalen’s electro-alter-ego is named Black Mold. If you didn’t know about Chad Vangaalen’s ability to make visual art, aside from his incredible ability to make audial art, let this be the proverbial “first time you see it,” even though it shouldn’t be because I told you to go look at it once before.

Chad’s a great (hauntingly psychedelic) illustrator, and the video you’ll see after the jump is a wonderful example of it, in motion. The video rides out some eventually disturbing patterns, but the song is so good and the drawings so dreamy that you can’t help but watch. It’s the new video for Black Mold’s, ‘Metal Spiderwebs.’ Continue reading “Black Mold: Metal Spiderwebs…”

Polaroid is back! Soon.

polaroid
So, I’m sure you’ve heard the news. The Impossible Project has lobbied long and hard enough to convince Polaroid’s new licensee, The Summit Global Group, to start up the gears again in order to produce quantities of the iconic instant film cameras. The Summit Global Group has commissioned the Impossible Project to ‘develop and produce a limited edition of Polaroid branded Instant Films in the middle of 2010.’ In addition, ‘large-scale production and worldwide sale of The Impossible Project’s new integral film materials under its own brand will already start in the beginning of 2010 — with a brand new and astonishing black and white Instant Film and the first colour films to follow in the course of the year.’

To go along with all the Polaroid frenzy, Polapremium is offering a special, “SX-70 Celebration Edition” kit full of vintage goodies and wonders to bring you back to the early days of this wonderful company. There are only 8 kits available, and they each cost $430 USD, but somehow it seems worth it to me. Follow the jump to see and read the contents of the bag. Continue reading “Polaroid is back!
