A New York State of Mind

posted by jordan

How To

How To Make It In America is your new favorite show. HBO kicked off its premier episode this week, which presented to us 2 twenty-something hustlers trying to ride the beast that is New York City. Is this NYC’s answer to Entourage? Maybe. With Mark Walberg as Executive Producer I’m sure we’ll see some similarities, but for now we’re looking forward to more cocaine fueled late nights and romanticized loft parties.

The show also flaunts Last Night’s Party–styled vernacular photography woven throughout the episode, bringing to life the 24 hr. NYC lifestyle. Peep the killer opening featuring ‘I Need a Dollar’ by Stone’s Throw artist Aloe Blacc

Yesterday, the good folks at THIS Los Angeles had us at their gallery space while they were setting up and hanging artwork for the show this Friday, February 12. There’s a huge range of really great artists showing their work, so for anybody who’s in the L.A. area, please stop in and say hello. Here’s a little video we made in promotion of the opening:

Alex Calderwood and The Art of Clutter

posted by jordan

Alex-Calderwood

The mastermind behind the infamous Ace Hotel chain Alex Calderwood discusses design aesthetic and the varied tastes of a cultural engineer in New York Magazine The Cut section.

Having been a key collaborator with brands Kaws, Alife, and Roman & Williams and founding the design and marketing firm NeverStop Calderwood might be something of a must read. He also covers the latest Opening Ceremony & Project 8 partnership with The Ace Hotel, capturing the independent spirit and intuitive curatorial eye in each of the brands.

Featured Product: ‘Minotaur’ by The Pixies

posted by matt

Either the Pixies are really hurting for cash, or they’re just selling out. I don’t really care, to be honest, because what’s in this package is pretty exciting.

Curated by graphic designer Vaughan Oliver and photographer Simon Larbalestier, this quintessential collection of work by one of the most influential bands in history is a must have for any die-hard fan. The ‘deluxe’ bundle includes:

• Five studio albums on 24k gold-plated CD/DVD/Blu-Ray (the last two formats feature 5.1 Dolby Surround)
• Unreleased 1991 live performance from Brixton
• 54-page book featuring work from Oliver and Larbalestier (who shot the cover art for all the Pixies’ studio albums)
• Custom designed packaging

The ‘limited edition’ bundle (pictured above) includes everything featured in the ‘deluxe’ bundle, plus:
• Individually numbered packages
• Hand-signed packaging by all the band members
• Test pressings of original vinyl albums (potentially)

The deluxe edition will only run you $230, while the limited edition might hurt a little more at $630. You can buy either one here.

I Am Love — Script typefaces not dead

posted by jordan

I Am Love thumb
It’s been a long time since my fascination for script has died, but it appears that 2010 might hold a resurgence in classical and elegant typefaces.

Premiering at Sundance this Friday, Luca Guadagnino’s I Am Love is the tragic love story set at the turn of the millennium in Milan. The film stars Tilda Swinton and you can already feel the brooding discontent dripping from characters.

Farm Tactics

Kyle Ng is the man behind L.A.-based utilitarian apparel/accessory brand, Farm Tactics. As a sixth-generation Chinese American, Ng is very proud and inspired by his American heritage, and as such uses repurposed native materials (military and non-) for items under the line.

Ng’s grandfather, an industrial designer in the 50s and 60s, was also a hefty influence in his life, and the weekends the two spent together inspired the line’s THE WEEKEND collection, comprised of tops made with special fabrics and pencil holders that were a staple of his grandfather’s wardrobe.

All the garments and bags are made right here in the U.S. and carried locally in workwear stores like Craft (L.A.) and BK Circus (Brooklyn), but you can also pick up some gear at their online store (which actually happens to be under maintenance right now).

Check out a cool interview with Kyle Ng over at Limitedhype, and be sure to click through the jump for some images of the rad bags the line is putting out. Continue reading “Farm Tactics…”

The New Minimum

posted by matt

new-minimum

Jacob Heftmann, the man behind NEW/STUFF, has decided to start anew, taking the site’s content to a fresh domain, structured in a non-blog (gasp!) format. Instead of focusing on the daily content, Heftmann has decided to go with more of a traditional magazine structure, presenting features and columns and all that good stuff. There is still a good amount of what seems to be daily content around the site, but I’m digging the new layout and it’s definitely worth a look. Check it out his first article series, Interesting Jobs in Graphic Design here.
