J.Crew vs. The Medium

J.Crew’s dramatic self-reinvention over the past couple years is news to no one. Their myriad collaborations with designers across the creative and cost spectrums have established themselves not only as wildly successful designers, but also retailers. More than any other company they’ve helped define the trajectory of the latest resurgence in classic Americana, funneling Red Wing, Sperry, Barbour and others right into the mainstream.

It would seem however, that their decidedly Northeastern sensibilities are about to take a twist towards the European. Watch above as model Mona Johannesson coquettishly prances about, showing off the company’s Fall ready to wear line. Nothing mind blowing, beyond the classic khakis and stripes you’d expect. But the NYT’s perpetually on point ‘The Medium’ column takes a deeper dive. Virginia Heffernan puts it thusly:

The re-emergence in pop fashion of the blue-and-white-striped sailor shirt has been a blessing to J.Crew’s Web site this summer. The shirt is sporty and thus not un-American, while also signifying “Paris,” a new concept jcrew.com has been audaciously colonizing. The site twinkles with references to France and haute couture, and recently it has positioned dissipated and mysterious Euro-type models in the slots that used to be reserved for “J. Crew models” — fresh-faced, wholesome strawberry blondes

The stateside European, in J. Crew’s imagining, wears all our usual American stuff — shorts, T-shirts, cargo pants, polo shirts — but has no use whatsoever for the simplicity and androgyny that used to be hallmarks of preppy…

You don’t envision someone in J. Crew playing lacrosse anymore; they seem more likely to be philosophizing and seducing…

This summer, then, what is the new J. Crew ideal? Not the East Hampton WASP, not anymore. Rather, it’s the sultry au pair watching the children. In sequins.

‘We Are All Workers’ Levi’s & Braddock PA

Levis Go Work-Say Mayday
Quick on the heels of their “Go Forth” campaign, Levi’s traces their roots in Americana a few steps deeper with their current documentary “We Are All Workers”. The Workers project aims to “empower and inspire” with their tales of the new American worker.

‘Go Work’ is the beautiful prologue to the ‘eleven part series documenting the new pioneers of Braddock, PA and the redevelopment of their town’. Levi’s has created an incredibly moving narrative with Braddock and I can’t wait to see the entire series flow. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Stephen Shore for Urban Outfitters

uo2

I’m not particularly a huge fan of Urban Outfitters, but I am indeed a very huge fan of legendary photographer, Stephen Shore. If you’re not familiar, please follow the link.

‘Known for his deadpan images of banal scenes and objects in the United States,’ Shore brings this aesthetic to UO’s latest ‘Fall Preview.’ It’s certainly a refreshing shift from their recent aesthetic, putting forth a more honest, less self-aware collection for the book. See more after the jump.

Sophomore — A Short Film by Cass Bird vs. Wildwood N.J.

Directed by Cass Bird for Sophomore NYC

** Edit** Seems that Alex has pointed out that the Sophomore film was inspired (I’m using that term very lightly) by a 1994 documentary titled Wildwood N.J.. The film is a study on a group of trashy broads (and I mean that in the best possible way) hitting the boardwalk scene in New Jersey. Directed by Carol Weaks/Cassidy and Ruth Leitman. The film is available @ Ruthless Films

Denim, undistressed

Screen shot 2010-06-22 at 12.06.04 AM

Sure we dabbled with 90s nostalgia a bit, but more than anything the last half of the last decade saw the style world take dead aim at a classic, conservative, distinctly American working class sensibility. The results were pretty on point. And what could possibly embody that crisp mid-century look quite like a great pair of jeans?

On his last trip to NYC my main man Landon Eber gave me some serious schooling on the new denim trade, the players and the fakers, the movers and the shakers. In fact, denim devotee Ginno Burgunio covered him for The San Francisco Chronicle in this week’s Style section. Check it out. Below, a blow by blow by Mr. Day Waste himself…
