Hollis Brown Thornton Q+A

posted by matt

hollis-brown
1. Hi Hollis. Where do you live? What do you like about it?

I live in Aiken, SC, which is also where I grew up. I realized I physically need the climate in the South while living in Chicago. There is all kinds of plant and animal and bug activity during the warm and hot times of the year, just a general sense of vitality, that is motivating. But it is mainly the heat, being hot, sweating, spending 7 months out of the year wearing only shorts and flip flops. I’m just very productive in those conditions.

Yesterday, the good folks at THIS Los Angeles had us at their gallery space while they were setting up and hanging artwork for the show this Friday, February 12. There’s a huge range of really great artists showing their work, so for anybody who’s in the L.A. area, please stop in and say hello. Here’s a little video we made in promotion of the opening:

Zineswap

zineswap

I’m somewhat ashamed to say that I’d not heard of Zineswap until now. Essentially, it’s a website enabling independent zine publishers to swap their zines with one another. “It also aims to become a vast archive of contemporary zine publishing, existing as both an online catalogue and an annual exhibition.” Such a rad idea.

The list of zines is already robust, and almost all have images to preview. In order to get your hands on some, all you have to do is submit your own. Check out a flip-through video and some images after the jump. Continue reading “Zineswap…”

MTV’s New Identity

posted by matt

It’s probably been a while since you’ve watched anything on MTV, that is, unless you’ve hopped on the Jersey Shore bandwagon (it’d be hard not to). But that’s neither here nor there. I came across these 6 videos directed by Matt Pyke of Universal Everything for MTV’s international rebrand, which will be going live soon, and they’re pretty awesome. From Creative Review:

The new idents see Universal Everything working with no less than 24 collaborators in nine different countries. “After the first phase of idents which were of a very abstract bias, this second phase of films had us working with live action and a lot more collaborators,” says Universal Everything’s Matt Pike of the idents.

Covers Therapy

Cover Therapy
Last night I was reading how when designers are feeling uninspired, often times an easy way to get their creativity flowing is to re-design popular movie posters, book covers, and record sleeves. Using a minimalistic approach to the design, artists have been re-creating their favorites and coming up with some really dynamic possibilities out of the classics.

But just when I thought that every TV show / Record / Movie had gotten a retro make-over, I stumbled upon French illustrator Stéphane Massa-Bidal’s most recent series Web Services. Stéphane transferred a web service (ie tumblr, twitter, facebook) to a book cover and found some really fun ideas in the process. I found this series both hilarious and intriguing. I particularly love the color palette and the tag line added to the individual pieces. See all of em after the jump! Continue reading “Covers Therapy…”

Allison Schulnik

I stumbled on Allison’s work over at Fecal Face, and I was completely blown away. She dabbles in an array of mediums, including sculpture and animation, but to me, her real strength lies in her painting. So many layers, colors and textures — she brings such life to her work — it’s really something else. Here’s my favorite response from her in the Fecal Face interview:

I over-indulge. I really just make work and I don’t really think about it. I like to see the material move and breath, and melt. I don’t like things to stay static.

Click through the jump to see evidence of why that’s really the case. Continue reading “Allison Schulnik…”

James Blagden

James Blagden has most certainly offended a person or two with his work, but that’s not to say it’s been without intention. He’ll take contemporary urban imagery and twist and shape it until it says what he wants it to. I’m not always into the ‘socially conscious’ art, but I like his style and the fact that a lot of these images are rooted in my generation. From his interview on Format magazine:

That was the inspiration for that whole series, like look how these people are portrayed on T.V. and the rest of it all came from television. Asians are nerdy or retarded, because either they’re in computer class or they’re William Hung or they know karate, they’re Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan.

See more images after the jump. Continue reading “James Blagden…”
