Brendan Lynch

blynch

Brendan is another homie I met while my friend was DJing a dingy, (literally) underground club in New York. We were trying to yell at each other over the music and crowd, and though we were only able to communicate a few things to one another, one of those I remembered was his website. I guess part of my mission in NY was to find creative people doing creative things, and Brendan certainly fit the bill. I perused his site, and found an array of different mixed-media work, all linked by a distinct style and approach. Unfortunately, for the kind of work Brendan generally does, it’s just better to see it in person, but hopefully these digital images will suffice. Check them out after the jump.

Tangents Interviews

ben_tour_tangents_00

As part of Booooooom’s first ever art show (in conjunction with Lifetime Collective), Jeff has been conducting interviews with each of the artists featured. The list is as follows:

Erika Somogyi (New York)
Jennilee Marigomen (Vancouver)
Garry Trinh (Australia)
Ben Tour (Gibsons)
Kenichi Hoshine (New York)
Luke Ramsey (Pender Island)

The first interview is up today, and it’s with the very talented painter/illustrator, Ben Tour. Definitely a nice one to kick off the series. I’ll post my favorite part of the interview after the jump along with the images Jeff posted. Continue reading “Tangents Interviews…”

Hannah Stouffer

bonnenuit

Hannah Stouffer is a Los Angeles Angeles-based illustrator, and her work is nothing short of breathtaking. From her site:

The heart of darkness exists within the light. Black Dawn, Dawn After Dawn Tepid Neon, Frozen Clarity.
This contrast, and the ever present existence of the two is constant. Macabre Elegance. Darkness Falls Forever… Since The Beginning.

So much depth, so much color, so much detail and mystique, it’s almost difficult to take in all that’s going on in these illustrations. And Stouffer is certainly anything but a ‘one trick pony.’ Her portfolio boasts a range of styles, typographical work, and art direction that renders her open to lots of different kinds of projects. Click through the jump to see this variety, along with a face to put alongside the work.

Milton Glaser Draws & Lectures

miltonglaser

There’s something fantastic about this video. It’s not necessarily the quality of the actual drawing that Glaser comes away with, or even so much getting to see the process of its construction. Rather, the magic in this video comes through the simultaneity of listening to his voice asserting ideas about drawing as an art form in its relation to our perception of reality, while watching him methodically piece together a rather simple portrait. This is something meditative, and rather than the voice detracting from the drawing or the drawing detracting from the voice, the two appropriately synchronize with one another, in some ways furthering the very concepts he’s trying to get across. Try not to be disappointed after all my hype. It’s not that great. Video post-jump.

Black Mold: Metal Spiderwebs

chadv

Chad Vangaalen’s electro-alter-ego is named Black Mold. If you didn’t know about Chad Vangaalen’s ability to make visual art, aside from his incredible ability to make audial art, let this be the proverbial “first time you see it,” even though it shouldn’t be because I told you to go look at it once before.

Chad’s a great (hauntingly psychedelic) illustrator, and the video you’ll see after the jump is a wonderful example of it, in motion. The video rides out some eventually disturbing patterns, but the song is so good and the drawings so dreamy that you can’t help but watch. It’s the new video for Black Mold’s, ‘Metal Spiderwebs.’ Continue reading “Black Mold: Metal Spiderwebs…”

Sterling Bartlett rules.

sbthumb

There I said it. Sterling Bartlett flat out rules. The Los Angeles Illustrator and designer has recently updated his portfolio with some bad-ass new work with a prestigious client list and some amazing graphite illustrations.

His punk rock and heavy metal lifestyle illustrations have become some of my recent favorites and I especially respect his straight forward, no bullshit presentation. The world will always need drawings of skulls, black metal paintings, and Zombie Morrisseys. Hit the jump for more. Continue reading “Sterling Bartlett rules.…”

Ssin

ssin

I found Ssin’s artwork over at Booooooom, and although I’m not a fan of just snagging shit off other blogs, this work got me really pumped. I’m a big time sucker for photography, so sometimes I have to remind myself that there are other mediums out there.

Ssin’s drawings are really intriguing. There’s definitely a ‘childish’ foundation in a lot these pieces, but they retain an intricate mystery and an innocent creativity that will have you scanning over every little line and space on the canvas. Check out a few more images after the jump. Continue reading “Ssin…”

Light Graffiti.

lightgraffiti7
Personally, I find calling this ‘light graffiti’ a bit of a misnomer. Regardless, what these dudes are doing (whether you like it or not) is pretty stunning. I love light painting, but I haven’t come anywhere close to what these guys are doing. This work is from the German crew, LAPP-Pro. I’m not as into the conceptual images so much, but it’s all pretty spectacular to me. From their site:

LAPP originates on a real-time basis directly in front of the camera. Created between opening and closing the shutter. The pictures shown here are in each case one single photo, not a result of working on the computer. With especially developed light and luminous tools they are projected on the sensor. Within a performance, form and colour by light arrange such complicated figures and light forms.

I’m on a mission to find said ‘luminous tools.’ Images after the jump.
