The Agony and the Ecstasy

happy.mondays

You’ll have to forgive my sentimentality. With the dog days of Summer 2010 upon us, I find myself looking more back than forward. I know what you’re thinking: “That’s some mid-life behavior right there!” or “save the introspection for December!” Alas, I admit it. I’m a nostalgic dude. But only in the best possible ways.

So when the sun popped up over the East River this morning and the mercury started to rise, I awoke with a single refrain in my head. It’s a big day in the North.

Gratuitous Bay Post

Fresh off the heels of blazing a hot wine country wedding, New York has a guy feeling wistful. I wouldn’t trade this town for anything, but there’s something to be said for that wide open, West Coast breezy vibe. Smashing the 5 on an overnight trip to LA. Chucking yourself off a silly huge cliff into an ice cold Sierra stream. Gettin’ weird with the locals in Big Sur. I’m ’bout it! You should be too. To help ease my urban jungle re-entry, I dug up an old fave.

If you’ve never heard of California, the homies Matt and Jordan have schooled you here and here.

Wayne hops on Drake’s ‘Light Up’ from jail over the phone

drake-wayne

One of the hotter (still fairly cold) tracks on the new Drake album, ‘Thank Me Later,’ just got a little hotter as Lil’ Wayne threw down his own verse from jail over the phone. The recording is obviously pretty bad, but he has a couple ill rhymes in there sliding him in at an easy second place after Hova. Listen/download below.

Mayday Exclusive: Dawes-‘My Girl to Me’

A while back, before they left for tour with Edward Sharpe, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes stopped by Mayday HQ. Of course we had to ask him to play a tune for us, so he chose ‘My Girl to Me,’ off their debut LP, North Hills, the way he’s wanted people to hear it for some time now. Enjoy it below!

A-Light-So-Brite_Say Mayday

For our summer mix jump-off, we asked Mickey Church from one of our favorite acts, the majestic White Arrows, to pull some bangers together. Here’s what he came up with -

“a light so brite,
a little bit of party. little bit of feeling. lot a bit of bangin.“

best,
mickey

Mark Weaver designs new How To Destroy Angels EP

Mark_Weaver-Say-Mayday

How To Destroy Angels released their latest 6-track EP titled How To Destory Angels as a free download yesterday. Normally I wouldn’t be there because I haven’t rocked NIN since I was in 7th grade, but I’m into Mariqueen from West Indian Girl and I instantly recognized the cover art illustrator as Mark Weaver. Weaver’s aesthetic is really growing into a signature style at this point which is awesome. Hit the jump to see the full illustration.
