In my mind, one’s personal phone photo archive might be the most intimate look into their lives and how they see the world. I have thousands of pictures that I’ve taken on my phone. Some are are of friends, some are of strangers, some aren’t of people at all. Some are for me, some are for family, and some are for girls that I’m trying to woo. In the case of xyxx, David McLaughlin and Kimberly Warner, two ‘slightly twisted lovers,’ their correspondence is based completely in phone pictures. Instead of emails or text messages, these two communicate in photographs — as they put it, ‘an ever evolving game of tag with no rules or expectations except to simply be present, and that’s the beauty of it.’

The photos they’ve come away with are often nothing more than a little girl dancing, or a streetlamp in the night. They manipulate the photos in their phone applications, but that’s about it. They’ve come away with some stunning images, and it’s a beautiful project that stands on legs of its own as they share it with the world. They have an art show and a book coming out on September 2nd. See some of the pictures along with the flyer after the jump.

Pax Americana

The Library of Congress maintains some stunning visual records of Depression-era America. Thumbing through these Kodachrome prints is like taking a step back in time. It evokes a uniquely American nostalgia for a place and time you never knew. Enjoy.

Dark Youth in Moscow

This morning I came across a post on one of our favorite sites, Public School, and its title immediately intrigued me. I was quick to learn that Dark Youth is a Russian photographic duo (Sasha Borodinova & Leyla Masharipova) who spent their summer documenting all the wild shit they and their friends were getting into in and around Moscow. The work reminds me somewhat of Sandy Kim’s, minus all the dicks, boobs, public urination and period blood. It’s cool to see kids getting down worldwide. Click through the jump to see some images.

{LA Photo} ‘It’s Better With The Wind’ by Scott G Toepfer

I’m gonna just start this out by giving a shout to Nick @ A Time To Get. ATG is flat out the best written site out there. Nick’s stories started as a daily read and have now progressed into a full on infatuation. If you fuck with Say Mayday and you don’t stay up on ATG, then you might as well just close this window out. Since we got that out of the way, it should come as no surprise that we learned about another amazing photographer and story-teller by the name of Scott G Toepfer above the fold of ATG.

Scott is a photographer living in Los Angeles and is releasing a preview of his gritty photo-essay about two wheeled truth on the road, ‘It’s Better With The Wind’ this Friday at Secret Service LA.

GQ x Lebron James

The September issue’s cover story for GQ features an interview and photo spread with the once beloved but now kind-of-despised superstar basketball player, Lebron James. Based on released excerpts, it should be fairly revealing and informative as he moves forward with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. See an excerpt, behind the scenes video, and pictures below.

“It’s not far, but it is far. And Clevelanders, because they were the bigger-city kids when we were growing up, looked down on us.… So we didn’t actually like Cleveland. We hated Cleveland growing up. There’s a lot of people in Cleveland we still hate to this day.”

Check out the pictures after the jump.

Grain & Gram

grainandgram

Grain & Gram is the new ‘Gentleman’s Journal’ that brings you articles and videos on dudes that are in the business of making hand-made, timeless wares. The site is pretty new, so they don’t have a ton of content at this point, but their art direction and photos are really nice, the subjects they’ve chosen are compelling, and they have a really cool short documentary on printmaker Nick Sambrato (pictured above) which you can watch below.

Contraband

contraband

The New York Times recently published part of a simple, yet fascinating photoset entitled ‘Contraband’ by Taryn Simon, which displays ‘items detained or seized from passengers or express mail entering the United States from abroad at the New York airport.’ Simon shot 1,075 photographs over 5 days at the Kennedy airport in New York and came away with some true gems that will ultimately end up in a book and as an exhibition. There is some certifiably wild shit in here (see dead bird above), and it really provides some insight into how fucking crazy the world can be. Check out a bunch of strange attempted imports after the jump.

Pitchfork Music Fest in Polaroids

pitchfork-polaroid-7

As part of the reinvigoration of their brand, Polaroid teamed up with Pitchfork for the indie music fest of the summer, sending a small crew of photographers to the event to capture some of the crowd happenings. There are some cool shots in here, but I think I’d like to have seen some performance stuff and maybe some more people going buckwild. I know that shit was not this tame. Check out some shots after the jump.
