Featured Product: ‘Minotaur’ by The Pixies

pixies-minotaur

Either the Pixies are really hurting for cash, or they’re just selling out. I don’t really care, to be honest, because what’s in this package is pretty exciting.

Curated by graphic designer Vaughan Oliver and photographer Simon Larbalestier, this quintessential collection of work by one of the most influential bands in history is a must have for any die-hard fan. The ‘deluxe’ bundle includes:

• Five studio albums on 24k gold-plated CD/DVD/Blu-Ray (the last two formats feature 5.1 Dolby Surround)
• Unreleased 1991 live performance from Brixton
54-page book featuring work from Oliver and Larbalestier (who shot the cover art for all the Pixies’ studio albums)
• Custom designed packaging

The ‘limited edition’ bundle (pictured above) includes everything featured in the ‘deluxe’ bundle, plus:
• Individually numbered packages
• Hand-signed packaging by all the band members
• Test pressings of original vinyl albums (potentially)

The deluxe edition will only run you $230, while the limited edition might hurt a little more at $630. You can buy either one here.

N.Y.C. in Photos

stanley

Two months ago, I had the opportunity to spend some time in New York City. It’s not often that I’m afforded the chance to get out there, but when I do, it’s always a very interesting experience, and it’s always different. The ways in which it differs from L.A. are many, and at times are tempting enough to make one consider a move.

I know it’s a bit after the fact now, but I wanted to post some pictures from my trip. Maybe I’ll even throw in a few words here and there. I apologize in advance for the small image sizes! Continue reading “N.Y.C. in Photos…”

Zineswap

zineswap

I’m somewhat ashamed to say that I’d not heard of Zineswap until now. Essentially, it’s a website enabling independent zine publishers to swap their zines with one another. “It also aims to become a vast archive of contemporary zine publishing, existing as both an online catalogue and an annual exhibition.” Such a rad idea.

The list of zines is already robust, and almost all have images to preview. In order to get your hands on some, all you have to do is submit your own. Check out a flip-through video and some images after the jump. Continue reading “Zineswap…”

Romka / Blood of the Young Interview

romka

I was super syked to come across this interview with German photographer Joscha Bruckert on Blood of the Young. I’m sad to say that I hadn’t heard about Joscha’s digital photo zine Romka previously, but now that I have, I can’t get enough. According to the site,

The idea behind [Romka] is to create a showcase for pictures that are not necessarily a representative excerpt of your work, but your most favorite pictures. These could of course be part of your portfolio, but also private pictures of your friends and family, snapshots, those that make you laugh or cry or the ones you can’t even remember taking.

This pretty much describes my favorite aspects of photography, so I was confident that I was going to love what was in the pages. Reading the BOTY interview with Joscha really only solidified my feelings about what he was doing with Romka, hitting the nail on the head with some of his responses, one of which you can read after the jump along with an array of photos from the zine. Apolis in Nepal

day8

High-end and philanthropic menswear line Apolis Activism has recently teamed up with Rapha to put out a line of cycling gear that falls in with their vision that is a “bridge between commerce and sustainable development.” In conjunction with this partnership, Shea Parton (Apolis) and Cole Maness (Rapha) have departed on a tour of Nepal–mainly to visit the women’s cashmere co-op that has been producing their holiday garments, but they’ve been cycling, hiking and taxiing around this far east country, the scenery of which is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Now on Day 11, The Apolis blog, Source, has been serving as a travelogue for the group (Jeff Clark has been photographing the trip), and in the entries you can find evidence of a trio that is tired, hungry, sick, curious, excited, inspired and more. Click through the jump to see some awesome photos of their journey thus far. Continue reading “Apolis in Nepal…”

Notes From the Velvet Underground

vu-book
The Velvet Underground finally became a coffee table book. Published by Rizzoli, the book features a slew of band ephemera that would have any VU fan drooling over the pages. “Posters, screen prints, photographs, ticket stubs, record covers, alternative record covers, film stills, letters and lyric sheets” all comprise the publication that may provide the most comprehensive look of all time into the band’s career. Not only does it document the life of this legendary rock band, but it documents its business and recreational relationship with one of the (if not the) most influential pop artists of all time, Andy Warhol.

The book comes in a large, hardback special edition, of which there are only 400 copies ($300), and a trade edition ($50). Buy it here. Continue reading “Notes From the Velvet Underground…”

Mt. Baldy

baldy-thumb

This weekend I had the good fortune of being able to take a little day trip up to Mt. Baldy with some friends. It’s only about an hour out of L.A. in the Angeles National Forest, and as such, it might be the most convenient place for any of us Angelinos to go see snow. I think it’s obvious that most of us take for granted the consistently nice weather in our city, but it’s nice to remind ourselves that this is a diverse place and that snow can be fun too. I thought I’d post some pictures to perhaps motivate you to put on a parka, some gloves and a beanie, hit the mountains and see the other side of L.A. that can be so easily forgotten. I didn’t want to bring my real camera for fear of it getting wet, so enjoy some iPhone shots after the jump — Happy holidays!

Highway To Swell

Lovers' Land

This is so fucking rad. Lovers’ Land follows the incredible story of three surfers on an epic surfing trip through Australia. Atop Deus Original custom 650’s, the crew rolled out from Sydney. Using last minute ‘logistics and supreme un-organization’ as their guide, the three nomads searched out waves and adventure.

Their blog Lovers’ Land is a beautiful tale of self exploration through surfing and motorcycles. Do yourself a favor and check out the whole story. (via Aritip) Continue reading “Highway To Swell…”
