Mike Mills. Graphics Films

Mike Mills, Lodown Interview

Mike Mills, Lodown Interview

And if you didn’t like Thumbsucker, you’ll most certainly hate my next movie.

One of the hardest working and most versatile artists of our generation is Mike Mills. There, I said it. For over 15 years Mills has worked in graphic design, music, installations, painting, and of course directing for both cinema and music video. In 1995 he co-founded the Director’s Bureau
with Roman Coppla ‘a multidisciplinary production company’ and has been able to keep himself a true Renaissance Man ever since.

With the release of a new book, Graphics Films Mike Mills has been getting a lot of attention lately. Graphics Films is an up to date look at Mills’ never before seen body of work (man, I really love saying body of work). I was able to find a really cool interview with Mike on Lodown Magazine’s site. In it, he even describes how his considers first feature film Thumbsucker, a failure, as well as his upcoming projects.

Roger Sucks. Michael Sieben Interview

We’re all broke, we all dress sort of stupid, and none of us want to have a real job.

Michael Sieben is certainly someone who I’ve always admired as an artist. He’s always seemed to be able to consistently chase his dreams and come out on top.

Along with running Terrible One’s the art department, Michael also finds time to run the ever growing Roger Skateboards as well as one of Austin’s most infamous gallery’s, Okay Mountain.

In this ESPN interview, Michael goes into his ideas about Roger and his approach to running Okay Mountain. Check out the interview for some inspiration. It’s really refreshing to hear someone that doesn’t take art and skateboarding too seriously.

Help I’m Alive

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m totally obsessed Emily Haine of Metric (I know, me and everyone else right?). Not only is drop-dead gorgeous, and obviously an amazing singer, but Emily also writes Metric’s equally vulnerable and violent music.

For Metric’s first full-length album in 4 years, Fantasies, Emily needed to strip everything down and find new inspiration for the new album. She found it in Buenos Aires.

And if you haven’t already, go buy Fantasies. It’s their best album.

Josh Harmony has a pretty rad interview on the Fallen Footwear site. Some cool stories in there and why “You’d be surprised how far a little appreciation and sincere respect will take you“

Boys Boys Boys

Art/design based? No. Creative/entertaining? Most definitely. Romance and relationship guru (plus friend), Alexi Wasser, tells tales of loves had and lost on her blog, Boys Boys Boys. Geared to a female audience, Wasser’s unedited video interviews and prose entries deconstruct some of those subjects and moments most intimate (and often graphic), breaking them down into innocent, relatable anecdotes. It’s a blog definitely worth checking out (even if you’re a guy), and it’s one that will undoubtedly have you wanting all those other romance bloggers and columnists to go shoot themselves in the face.

Christopher Walken showed me this.

Elimae. I’m not quite sure how to define what this is, so I’ll let the site do it for me:

“elimae, pronounced el-ee-may, and standing for electronic literary magazine, was founded by Deron Bauman in 1996 and has published essays, fiction, interviews, poetry and reviews.”

Simple, elegant, real and not. Enjoy.

Dawes on The Bluegrass Special

Not sure about the nature of this site, but it’s currently featuring articles on two awesome bands: Dawes and Delta Spirit. The site seems pretty lo-fi, but the writing is actually really good and engaging. Check out the (long but definitely worth-reading) Dawes article here.

P.S. The B+W Dawes photos were stolen from yours truly!
