‘Age of Consent’ | New Order
The Story
“Age Of Consent,” off of New Order’s “Power, Corruption, and Lies” is among my favorite opening tracks of all time. What a jam! In my mid-teens I shrugged off New Order for being too “new wave;” I was into the stark and dark contrast of their previous incarnation as Joy Divison. It wasn’t until a few years later that I was able to understand, appreciate, and love this pop masterpiece. New Order’s use of synthesizers on this record was ahead of its time, and still sounds fresh over 20 years later.
This sound has been rehashed over and over again, yet I have not heard one modern group that’s gotten it right. People forget how raw this record is. I believe a good song stands on its own, regardless of arrangement or instrumentation, and as such, I think our acoustic cover of “Age of Consent” proves how incredible the original really is… A bunch of freaks with banjos and mandolins still might manage to make it sound good! And hey, anything beats listening to Orgy’s New Order cover. Yuck.
