Romka / Blood of the Young Interview

posted by matt

romka

I was super syked to come across this interview with German photographer Joscha Bruckert on Blood of the Young. I’m sad to say that I hadn’t heard about Joscha’s digital photo zine Romka previously, but now that I have, I can’t get enough. According to the site,

The idea behind [Romka] is to create a showcase for pictures that are not necessarily a representative excerpt of your work, but your most favorite pictures. These could of course be part of your portfolio, but also private pictures of your friends and family, snapshots, those that make you laugh or cry or the ones you can’t even remember taking.

This pretty much describes my favorite aspects of photography, so I was confident that I was going to love what was in the pages. Reading the BOTY interview with Joscha really only solidified my feelings about what he was doing with Romka, hitting the nail on the head with some of his responses, one of which you can read after the jump along with an array of photos from the zine. Listen: Pearl Harbor — ‘Luv Goon’

posted by matt

pearl-harbor

I was lucky enough to come across this stuff today, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. LA-Based, ‘90s dream-pop’ outfit Pearl Harbor is centered around sisters Pearl, 22, and Skyler, 14. Don’t let their age or femininity fool you though, these girls are the real deal, with their ears in the right places, listening to bands like My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Stan Hubbs, and Michelangelo. Pitchfork recently sat down with the elder of the two, Pearl, and there’s a nice little Q+A that you can read here. I must say, even on paper she’s quite charming. Check out Pearl Harbor’s track, ‘Luv Goon’ below.

Victory or Death — The Illest Shit Ever

posted by jordan

RZA Victory

OH MY GOD. This has got to be the most amazing thing I have ever seen. For the release of the RZA’s new album Victory or Death, the RZA has commissioned an artist to re-create the American Revolution era painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware. In Bobby Steels’ fine art recreation, you will notice RZA leading the attack with Ol’ Dirty and GZA and an army of Ninjas.

Watch: Up In The Air | Opening Title Sequence

posted by jordan

The holidays are (finally) over as is my family’s tradition to see every god damn movie we possibly can. From Avatar to It’s Complicated I got to check out just about every big budget picture the Holiday season had to offer. One of the films I was looking really forward to seeing was Jason Reitman’s Up In The Air. And the moment the opening title sequence began I knew I was in for a treat.

Created by Shadowplay Studio, Up In The Air’s opening title sequence set the theme and the tone of detachment of George Clooney’s Ryan Bingham beautifully. The film follows a man who spends his life completely void of relationships while looking down at the world from 30,000 feet in the air. Using aerial photography, and a haunting cover of ‘This Land is Your Land’, Air’s title sequence achieved a wonderfully distant and abstract view of the world.

Shadowplay’s Creative Director, Gareth Smith discusses the ideas and concepts they explored while creating the titles for Up In The Air. Additionally, Shadowplay directed the title sequences for ‘Thank You For Smoking’ as well as ‘Juno’ both of which are fabulous sequences so it was really cool to hear the concepts behind Up In The Air and how they differed from the other films.

Hit the jump to see the interview! Continue reading “Watch: Up In The Air | Opening Title Sequence…”

Bryan Derballa — 2009 in photos

posted by jordan

Bryan Derballa is easily one of my favorite photographers whose work I always look forward to seeing. Within the last year, Derballa’s work has progressed into seamlessly blending documentary photography with art photography. Bryan has the uncanny ability to capture a rich story with every shot no matter what is going on in the world around him.

Thankfully he loves to share as much as he loves to shoot and Bryan has pulled together a beautiful slideshow of 2009. Enjoy and be sure to follow Bryan @ Love Bryan

Keith Schofield’s Top 5 Music Videos of 09

posted by matt

keithschofield

When we thought of doing our ‘Top 5 Music Videos of the Year,’ it occurred to us that many of the videos we’ve already posted on this site would wind up in that list. Hence the decision to ask director Keith Schofield to compile one for us.

If you haven’t seen his work, then you’ve been missing out. Keith is surely one of the best, most creative contemporary music video directors around, doing inspiring work with independent artists including CSS and The BPA, as well as unconventional videos for mainstream artists like Lenny Kravitz and MIMS. See his list of the best videos of this year, as well as a couple of his own, after the jump. Continue reading “Keith Schofield’s Top 5 Music Videos of 09…”

Julian Casablancas 11th Dimension

posted by jordan

The very first video from Julian Casablancas solo album ‘Phrazes For The Young’ premiered this week. I’m just come right out and say it. 11th Dimension completely rules.

Julian manages to maintain his sleazy and smoldery swagger while transcending time and space in the club, floating in outer space, wearing a neon leather jacket, and in some sort of 1980’s street fight. Seriously, can someone tell me what is it like to be Julian Casablancas? I’m dying to know.

Watch: Nick Cave — “Love Letter”

posted by matt

nick cave

My good friend and incredible musician, Blake Mills (who you will be seeing a Cover Me from soon), showed me this today. I was blown away. I’m a moderate Nick Cave fan, but this video is so creative and inspiring in its minimalism. With every shot locked off on a tripod, it feels like you’re just watching a sequence of photographs (albeit amazingly composed photographs), but it’s so much more. Blake said he thought it was directed by one of my favorites, Wim Wenders, but that will go unconfirmed as I can’t find any more information on it. I won’t ruin the experience much more than I already have, but it’s a must watch, and you can see it after the jump.
