LISTEN: Sleigh Bells

posted by jordan

Sleigh Bells

Brooklyn’s Sleigh Bells ruined my morning. Our homies @ HOBO FM just pulled together some select tracks from Sleigh Bells and I have pissed away my entire morning running through them all.

Lo Fi, simple melodies that turn outright raw with grinding guitar and over modulated dance hall beats. Their track Crowd on the Ground straight knocks. Get down on this right now.

Blood is the New Black Anniversary

posted by jordan

Blood is the new Black 5yr

The Silverlake Artwalk popped off this past weekend and I was pleasantly surprised with how much fun I had. I think I actually did the thing backwards as I desperately made my way down to the Junc Gallery to catch the Blood is the New Black Anniversary reception (and see Sterling Bartlett and drink free beer).

Letters of Note

posted by matt

lettersofnote

Letters of Note is a great (relatively) new site compiling old hand-written and typewritten letters, all compelling in some form or fashion. Business letters, family letters, legal letters… I’ve been obsessed with physical mail now for a long time, so I love perusing this site, looking at documents spanning from present day to decades past. My favorites, of course, are the old; the handwriting was so elegant (in some cases), the typewriters so imperfect. And despite the vernacular being so different, these letters are still riddled with themes and feelings we can all relate to today. Financial hardship, curiosity, longing for a loved one, pride… it’s all here. The other nice thing about the site is that each letter is accompanied by a little backstory and a transcript.

I think above all else, reading these letters helps me put my own life into a little bit of perspective. See some letters after the jump.

Alex Welsh

posted by matt

During my time in NY, my good friend Bryan Derballa (lovebryan) has provided me the opportunity to meet some really great and interesting people. In the coming weeks, I’ll be posting on their work, but I figured I’d start with someone I’ve quickly befriended: photojournalist (/documentary photographer) Alex Welsh. He recently moved out here from San Francisco, and since graduating from SFSU, he and a group of friends have quickly become some of the more notably talented guys in the small world of photojournalism.

Alex has been dedicated to cultivating stories that ‘explore the complexity and soul of the human existence.’ His work is gritty, provocative, and powerfully emotional. From his (rather dangerous) photojournalism work at Hunters Point in San Francisco to his portrait photography, Alex’s style is strong and present — always supported by an authenticity and dedication to the story. See a bunch of wonderful photos after the jump and be sure to check out his site (linked above). Continue reading “Alex Welsh…”

50 LAPD Badges

posted by matt

LAPD

I thought this was really rad. The LA Times Magazine has a dope feature with an image timeline on the history of the LAPD police badge dating back to 1869. Accompanying the images are synopses of poignant historical moments for the force (often which reflect rather poorly on them), i.e. Biggie’s murder, the “Sleepy Lagoon” Mystery, the Chinese Massacre, etc. Definitely something interesting to check out. See more badges post-jump.

Listen: Yeasayer — Ambling Alp

posted by jordan

Yeasayer

At first I debated posting this track due to the obvious popularity of a new track from Yeasayer, but once I realized that I couldn’t get the god damn track out of my head, I took it as a sign.

Ambling Alp is the first single from Brooklyn art-psych rockers Yeasayer’s sophomore release; Odd Blood. Thus far, their sound has taken a step in the light hearted direction but I listen to enough downer shit to feel good about myself once and a while.
