Flaming Lips + Naked Cyclists

posted by matt

flaminglips1

So, it’s the weekend, and weekend posts mean fun posts. As such, some behind the scenes photos recently surfaced of the filming of The Flaming Lips’ new video for “Watching the Planets.” For this video, Wayne Coyne called to arms a bunch of (hippie?) Portlanders to convene in the woods, riding their bicycles, wearing… nothing. That’s right, a bunch of nude cyclists buttressing Coyne in his now signature ‘spaceball’ thing. I got to see him ride in that that for the first time ever a few years back, by the way. Check out more penises and breasts after the jump.

Pajti Básci

posted by matt

basi1

There really isn’t much information on the man who creates these one-of-a-kind, hand-made bicycle frames. His name is Pajti Básci, he is Hungarian, and from what it looks like, he’s been doing this for a long time. This photographer, ‘Barnie,’ who may also be hungarian, has been taking photos of him and his frames for a little while now, and recently, he received Básci’s last one before he retired. There ain’t no design studio here — just lots of metal, tools, four walls and a roof. Click through the jump to see some amazing images of these very detail-oriented frames.

COMBO

posted by jordan

Spectacular collaborative animation between artists BLU (Italy) and David Ellis (US). Working for 10 days straight, the duo created COMBO, a structural conscience animated painting that practically lives and breathes. In addition to a delightfully executed production (produced by Italian Studio Cromie) the short features a magnetic soundtrack that creates the fantastic world.

I love when different faucets and contemporary artists come together to create work like this. It really takes a canvas to the next level. Also, check out BLU’s original animated painting, MUTO, after the jump!

Werner Hertzog creates a film school that’s not for the faint of heart

posted by jordan

Werner Hertzog

“If you want to make a movie, stay out of the system. Steal a camera. Forge documents. Break into a car. You can make a film for five thousand dollars. There are no excuses anymore. Drive a cab, become a bouncer in a sex club. I worked nights in a factory. I’m a soldier.“
–Werner Hertzog 2008

For those that are willing to listen, Hertzog will teach. The prolific director has created the Rouge Film School for storytellers who are concerned with the essential questions to filmmaking: How do you sensitize an audience? How is space created and understood by an audience? How do you create illumination and an ecstasy of truth? All held in a intimate setting, taught by Hertzog himself.

Devendra Banhart ‘What Will Be’

posted by cameron

Whenever I think the term ‘Anti-folk’ is dead, Devendra Banhart pops out of a bush somewhere reminding me that he’s keeping it alive. Banhart will release his newest endeavor, What Will Be on October 27th, and although most everything this man does it a bit eccentric, he just topped it all by signing to Warner Brothers, who will handle its release. How does this happen you ask? According to Banhart, he was extremely unhappy with his indie label and got offered to make the jump. Based on a few recent track leaks, it appears some things have changed. Less guitar solos and a few ballads mark a turn this time around. I guess we’ll have to wait to hear the rest, I just hope he doesn’t become normal.

Watch: Fool’s Gold — ‘Surprise Hotel’

posted by matt

Let me start by saying two things:
1. I really, really love this band. If ever I’m in need of a good mood-boost, I turn to these guys.
2. If you don’t watch this video, you’re a fucking idiot.

Now that that’s out of the way, I know we’ve been posting a lot of music videos lately, but there just seem to be so many good ones coming out right now. On top of that, they’ve all got that nice end-of-summer feel to them, and we’re suckers for it. Watch out for elderly people spraying each other with soda, choreographed dancing, and chicks in 80s-styled bikinis playing saxophone by the pool. This is one of those videos that has you going, “man, I wish I made that one.“

Fall Look — Tom’s Cordones

posted by jordan

tom's cardones

Ya ya ya, I know, Tom’s Shoes, the true mark of a hipster (either that or your neighborhood is going to shit). I ain’t even gonna lie, I had my apprehensions about their update on the classic Argentinean shoe the Alpargata (which is the real shit!!), but for Fall ’09 Tom’s has released the Cordones and they look absolutely amazing. The Cordones are a laced (or un-laced) cut to please a more masculine audience and give a more versatile style for the changing seasons. Hit the jump to see more colours!
