Hamburger Eyes Issue 013

hamburger-eyes_1

Photography collective Hamburger Eyes just released issue 13 of their book, and by the looks of the preview images, it’s gonna be a good one. It’s a whopping 150 pages, hard-bound, and only costs 10 bucks. Well worth it in my opinion. The list of photographers is as follows:

Watch: Miike Snow — Silvia

Miike Snow is one of the many artists that emerged in 2009 and simply would not be ignored. Although their tracks generally gain quick popularity in the clubs and blogs, it’s nice to see young bands doing things that are anything but predictable or safe.

Directed by Marcus Soderlund, ‘Silvia’ paints a bleak & dismal picture of post-economic fallout / pre-canabilism society (think The Road by Cormac McCarthy). I found Silvia wonderfully depressing. Continue reading “Watch: Miike Snow — Silvia…”

“Repeat After Me: I am Free”

insight-repeat-after-me

As you may or may not know, surf/skate clothing brand Insight has a reputation for killing it with their ad campaigns. This one in particular got them quite a bit of attention, but now they’re back with a new campaign comprised of two documentaries, one surf, one skate, entitled “Repeat After Me: I am Free.”

There’s limited information on the project as of now, but the films appear to be shot on film and follow their teams’ big hitters (including newly signed Jamie Thomas) as they travel around doing what they do. The films feature music from the likes of The Flaming Lips, Port O’Brien and The Almighty Defenders, and are quite enjoyable to watch, despite the presence of very little source sound.

Open Your Face And Make Words

I’ve been big fan of Impactist (director duo, Kelly Meador and Daniel Elwing) and their diverse film productions, designs, animations, and music projects for quite some time now. I love seeing their work and the brilliant process and sharp attention to animation and design.

This morning while peeping our Vimeo page, I noticed that Impactist released this little gem of a promo for their EP titled ‘Open Your Face And Make Words’

From Impactist:

You can make more words with your face than with your mouth. So you’ll hear more with your eyes than you can see with your ears.

Slang Chickens LP

slang-chickens-thumb

The recently released Slang Chickens LP (on their own label, Psychedelic Judaism) breaks from current trending styles in independent music. There are no synthesizers, the vocals are not laden with reverb, the guitars distort naturally via overdriven amplifiers. The record finds its roots in the punk and grunge sounds of the early 90s, while managing to weave in some fucked up approach to country music mobilized by unconventional use of the banjo. Simply stated: it rocks.

The 11-song collection isn’t all driving guitars and biting vocals, however. Songs like ‘Wild Winds’ and ‘Blues (Dripping Down My Leg)’ offer some nice breathing room in a record that’s otherwise meant to get you pumped. The record is dynamic; it experiences some sentimentality and a bit of self-exploration, but overall, this record is a pick-me-up worthy of headphone listening or jamming to at a party.

The vinyl record itself is also a thing to behold. The band’s lead singer and songwriter, Evan Weiss, came through and hooked us up with one, and it is beautiful. Click through the jump for a description and lots of pictures. Continue reading “Slang Chickens LP…”
