Prada — ‘First Spring’

first-spring-thumb

This one is really special. I know it might be daunting to press play on a video that’s 9 minutes long, but take it from me: it’s worth it. At times playing like a Jarmusch film, Prada’s video component to their Spring/Summer ’10 campaign is called First Spring, a black and white ‘contemporary film by Chinese art star Yang Fudong.’ It’s a silent film (with a wonderful score, I might add) following different characters placed in different settings (and perhaps different time periods). Their clothing is all that links them to one another, and the choreography, blocking, and shot selection is unreal. Take a look at some screen shots after the jump if you need more convincing. Hands down my favorite ‘video lookbook’ I’ve seen in a long, long time.

Listen: Atlas Sound — Shelia (CRACKS remix)

Bradford-Cox-thumb

It’s been rainy as shit in Los Angeles and I been listening to downer shit all week (ie: Aziz Ansari’s Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening. Or maybe that was just a let-downer).

Thankfully, Paris duo Cracks gave Atlas Sound’s Shelia the ole’ spaced out, 8-bit treatment. I know you were obsessed with the original track, so go on, enjoy yourself with this one.

Hipster Chocolate

mast-brothers14

Okay, maybe that’s an unfair label to place on it, but Rick and Michael Mast are pretty steezy dudes and their shop is in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s ‘New York city’s only bean to bar chocolate maker, and one of only a handful of artisan chocolate makers in the United States.’ I’m fascinated by the idea of small-batch, handmade anything, let alone chocolate, and The Selby’s photos (which you can see after the jump) provide an intimate look into the entire process. I know where I’m going next time I’m out in Brooklyn. Mast Brothers Chocolate.

Spike Jonze directs a love story in an Absolut World — ‘I’m Here’

Spike Jonze latest short film “I’m Here”, which premieres this week at Sundance, looks to be a step back in Jonze’s roots as a commercial director. Absolut Vodka comissioned Jonze to write and direct a film depicting creativity conquering conformity.

Although it seems that the short film is purely branded content, Absolut hopes to break new ground in independent film markets as the short has been accepted in the Sundance, Berlin, and Turkey film festivals. (via Fast Company)

Bodysurf Zine

bodysurf10

Anybody who’s spent a good amount of time in the ocean understands the beauty and magnificence of the wave. Big or small, looking down a barrel or a clean shoulder as the lip lifts and comes down overhead has a magical, cavernous feeling like no other. Even if you prefer just wading around and ducking under waves, you’ve likely peeked in and experienced it.

Bodysurf Zine (now in its 4th issue) is comprised of lots of these kinds of photos (in addition to many others), and even more than the visual stimulation they provide, these images bring to mind the childish enjoyment of just being out there, floating and goofing around, gliding on your belly, getting tumbled about in the soup. When I was a little kid and the waves got too big for us to handle, my friends and I would wait for the whitewash to come in, curl up in a ball and let it spin us round and round till we couldn’t tell which way was up. Whenever I dip in without a board now, I try to travel back to that time, just a little bit. See some great photos from Bodysurf Zine after the jump.

Thanks to Drift for pointing me to these.

I Am Love — Script typefaces not dead

I Am Love thumb
It’s been a long time since my fascination for script has died, but it appears that 2010 might hold a resurgence in classical and elegant typefaces.

Premiering at Sundance this Friday, Luca Guadagnino’s I Am Love is the tragic love story set at the turn of the millennium in Milan. The film stars Tilda Swinton and you can already feel the brooding discontent dripping from characters.

Closeness

Danilo Parra has been working on a documentary about a New York panhandling saxophone player named Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre. The film chronicles his experience in struggling to record his last album, dedicated to his wife of 20 years, entitled “Closeness.” I’m super excited to see this one. It comes out in February after Kalaparusha finishes recording. Some photos to go along with the teaser after the jump. Continue reading ‘Closeness’…

Diesel Gets Stupid

The popular apparel company has us scratching our heads on this one, and after being presented with something as rad as last year’s Levi’s Go Forth campaign, this is mildly disappointing, to say the least. It’s fairly obvious that, while completely obscuring the meaning of the word ‘stupid’ to utilize its magnetism, they’re hopping on the ‘young and free’ brandwagon (like that?), and in my opinion, it’s just annoying. I’ll refrain from further expressing my ‘smart’ thoughts on this one, and you can decide for yourself. Check out some stupid photos from the campaign (that a lot of smart people surely approved) after the jump.
