We are extremely happy and excited to present the second, and final part of Alex Klein’s Shotwell episode. In part two, we learn about the actual production of God Went Surfing With The Devil, the responsibilities of being a documentary filmmaker, and the effects the whole experience had on him. We are so very pleased to announce the premiere of Say Mayday’s original series, Shotwell!

“Shotwell is a documentary series following the visual artist. We’re not curious as to what their favorite lens or pencil is. We want to know why it is they need to use those things. Watch Shotwell to find out what you really want to know about the people who are creating all the things you can’t stop looking at.”

In this two-part episode, we feature filmmaker Alex Klein, who with a crew of three friends, spent two months shooting in war-torn Israel and Gaza, exploring surfing as means of peacemaking in the region.

Directed by our dear friend Alex Klein (who you SHOULD know from yesterday’s post on his Shotwell Teaser), and all shot on the Canon 5D Mark II, this video lives up to the fun these guys have on stage. We were just at Alex’s house last night when he showed us this video and mentioned that it might premiere on Pitchfork TV (after which he said he’d have to it see to believe it). Well, today, it happened. Spontaneous, anonymous knifings in the middle of nowhere and a bunch of beautiful shots make this video a must-see. Check it out after the jump.

I’m so excited to be able to show this to you all. But first, a little bit of info on our series, Shotwell:

Shotwell is an online, short-form documentary series on visual artists. These artists are special: their magnetism is unique, their personas strong. They don’t just paint paintings or shoot photographs; they ride skateboards, stage houses, weave through traffic on bicycles, and jump off cliffs. They operate independently as creative makers and doers.

We’ll go meet these people in their own environment. We’ll talk with them as they let us into their world and divulge those elements most pertinent to their work. We’re not curious as to what their favorite lens or pencil is. We want to know why they need to use those things. Watch Shotwell to find out what you really want to know about the people who are creating all the things you can’t stop looking at.

Alex Klein is a budding filmmaker who recently finished his first feature-length documentary, ‘God Went Surfing with The Devil’. In the upcoming episode, we explore his roots growing up in San Francisco as a professional skateboarder, his perspective on filmmaking, and amongst many other things, ‘God Went Surfing with The Devil’.
